The annual Free Community Concert on in the heart of the Central City is a highlight on the Cape Town social calendar. Staged as a showcase of a selection of artists from the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) lineup, each year is a party of note.
This time around, on 29 March, attendees will get to see “real funky divas” En Vogue and local afro-pop heroes Mango Groove, among others. See the poster for the full lineup.
The Free Community Concert, held on Greenmarket Square, is as old as the festival itself and – says Carenza van Willingh, media and marketing manager for CTIJF organisers espAfrika – it is “perhaps the most popular event on the CTIJF programme. We started it with the idea of bringing the music to the captive audience of Capetonians and the visiting guests of our city.”
As the CTIJF is a Central City party, the Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID), has been involved since 2000. As a sponsor of the Free Community Concert, the organisation helps give back to the community by providing top-up cleaning services to the event. The CCID’s Urban Management department also assists the organisers in obtaining stakeholder signatures for noise exemption certifications.
Festivities begin at 17h00 on Wednesday 29 March. See you there!
The 18th CTIJF main event follows at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on 31 March and 1 April. At the time of publication, day pass tickets were still available at R690. The festival also has a large training and development programme, which includes music and journalism career workshops, and an interactive show for kids. Find out more at www.capetownjazzfest.com.
