Rethinking the William Fehr Collection
Ongoing

To not take things at face value is something we must always challenge ourselves to do to grow and see the world differently. That’s what this exhibition, curated by Esther Esmyol, wants viewers to do. While it’s slightly outside of the CCID’s operational footprint at the Castle of Good Hope, it’s significant and worth viewing. It has extensive historical art and objects collected by Cape Town-based businessman Dr William Fehr. Iziko Museums is the custodian of the collection and urges viewers to look at the stories behind what’s presented and see multiple meanings.

Artist Admin is the CBD’s newest gallery in the East City. Pretorius was inspired by the past two pandemic years which she says, “required more stillness than ever before”. She explains: “This stillness was exaggerated by turning to my brushes for endless hours to escape, observing a subject for extended periods of time, suddenly feeling how full life is when we stop to give it attention.”

THK Gallery exhibitions
Now on till 30 March 2022

Square Dance by German artist Thomas Wachholz is a sight for sore eyes. The gallery explains that he uses a visual style and foundations of Pop Art to make colourful paintings with clean lines that borrow elements of matchboxes, which symbolise his shifting perceptions from the object. While Wachholz has exhibited in various places, this is his first exhibition on the African continent and is not to be missed. Another great exhibition that’s showing in parallel to Wachholz’s show is de.code by artists Talut Kareem, Lerato Motaung and Lulama Wolf. The artists are in “conversation” with Wachholz and look at “symbolic abstraction and coded meanings”.
Where: 52 Waterkant St, THK Gallery

99 Loop Gallery exhibitions
Now on till 26 March 2022

After a stellar presentation at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair 2022, 99 Loop Gallery is back with an exciting show by Cape Town-based artist Jonathan Silverman. His work centres around the space between virtual and physical reality. He is quoted in a VISI interview as saying: “Almost half of the inhabitants on this planet carry around a little black mirror full of wonder and knowledge. I’m interested in how our experience of physical reality marries our everyday virtual one, and how they affect one another. I do this by looking at patterns and types of nature because it is nature itself that we are falling into and out of.” To receive a preview catalogue, email gallery@99loop.co.za.

Contested Bodies
16 March to 2 April 2022

This production is inspired by the events that happened in March 2015 when the UCT student and political activist Chumani Maxwele, along with other students, protested the Cecil Rhodes statue and threw human excrement on it. The moment started a conversation about the trauma of South Africa’s colonial past. Producers, Fred Abrahamse and Marcel Meyer say in their outrage for the stage, they plan “to do some faeces flinging of their own in an outrageous show that is likely to be the most controversial and contested play of the year”.
